Trauma therapy in Denver, Colorado
Are you tired of feeling like your past controls you? Do you notice patterns of trauma and instability?
Enter EMDR Therapy, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.
EMDR is an evidence backed, specialized technique that has shown remarkable success in helping individuals process and overcome the impact of trauma. EMDR has also been proven helpful to overcome anxiety, depression, panic attacks, disordered eating, interpersonal challenges, phobias, and more.
Trauma does not have to be one big event. We all have smaller traumas that happen throughout our life, including the ways we were raised. Attachment is something that we learn from the time we are born, and it impacts the way we relate to others and show up in relationships.
If you are seeking therapy that goes beyond traditional talk therapy and addresses the deeply rooted thoughts, emotions, and memories you are holding, EMDR may be a great fit for you. EMDR is evidence based, client-centered, and empowers individuals to unlock their innate capacity to heal.
What can EMDR address?
Trauma, big or small: Whether you’ve experienced a single traumatic event or chronic stress, EMDR can help.
Anxiety and Depression: EMDR can be a valuable tool in addressing underlying causes of depression and anxiety, and to decrease distress around feelings of panic.
Attachment Issues: If you struggle with insecure or anxious attachment in relationships, EMDR can help reshape your relationship patterns.
Body Image and Disordered Eating: EMDR can be integrated to address the root cause of body image issues and disordered eating patterns.
Here’s what we’ll do together
Eight Phases to Overcoming Trauma
During an EMDR session, we will collaboratively explore distressing memories and experiences. Bilateral stimulation is then employed to help your brain reprocess these memories, allowing you to integrate them in a healthier way.
Bilateral stimulation can take the form of guided eye movements, taps, or sounds. This process facilitates the resolution of emotional and cognitive difficulties associated with past traumas or distressing events.
The 8 Phase EMDR treatment model includes:
1) History Taking & Treatment Planning: We’ll discuss your history and determine specific issues to target.
2) Preparation: I’ll provide you with coping mechanisms and relaxation exercises to ensure you are ready for processing. This is also where I incorporate ego states or parts therapy to gain stability.
3) Assessment: We’ll identify specific target memories and associated beliefs.
4) Desensitization and Reprocessing: Bilateral stimulation is used to process and desensitize the emotional charge of targeted memories.
5) Installation: Positive beliefs are reinforced to replace negative ones.
6) Body Scan: We’ll address any residual physical tension or discomfort related to our target memory.
7) Closure: Each session concludes with a re-evaluation of your current emotional state and any necessary grounding or containment techniques.
8) Re-evaluation: We’ll review progress and adjust our focus as needed.
